Day One Rome

The first day was probably the most challenging. After having
travelled and not slept for nearly 24 hours we arrived at what would
be midnight back home but was about 5:30 in Rome. Time in Rome was
short so we immediately set out, without any rest. The most immediate
thing to strike any outsider is how old Rome is. There is not a single
new building anywhere, everything is ancient and full of history. Some
famous old building waits around every corner. During this time we
visited the Spanish steps and explored the nearby area. The next
morning involved setting out at 8:30 for the Vatican. We mainly toured
the museum, which contained artefacts and art from over two thousand
years of roman and church history. The highlight of the visit was the
absolutely enormous St. Peter's basilica, the largest church in the
world. The dome is the highest point in Rome, and by law, no higher
building can be built. The next stop was the colosseum, which is
impressive both in it's size and longevity, being nearly 2000 years
old but still mostly standing. While walking home we passed by the
roman forums and a monument to Italian unification. The trip so far
has been an enriching experience, mostly isolated from our technology
and in an ancient world so unlike our own.
